I know, I know… I promised to devote myself on growing and support Thálassa with an adventure guide and the first module. The guide will arrive when inspiration strikes me (and when the time will come, it’s going to be quick to write down). The module is quite ambitious since it will be a situational ecosystem to play ancient Knossos in the Mythical Age.

It will takes time, a lot. For now I am documenting and I also ordered a insightful book on excavations and archeological park of Knossos.

Writing rulesets is my greatest enjoyment when it comes to RPGs. I really suck hard in writing adventures, but I really like to hack and mix rules, tables and ideas. Sorry pals, Here we go again! ^\_^"

My plans were to write a new Cairn Hack which was to be a sword and planet themed game, allegedly named “Swordsmen of the Solar System”. Its lore would be based on beloved authors (by me at least) like Edgar Rice Burroughs, C.L. Moore and Leigh Brackett. One day I will definitely try to write something like this.

* * *

Coming to the topic of this post, I am writing the _other_ game I wanted to do for some time now. Like _Cairn_ took _Knave_ backgrounds and equipment tables, I based them on a little unknown gem called [_Spacer_](https://3rddog.itch.io/spacer-v2), a _Knave_ sci-fi hack by Paul Umbers. I wanted to translate _Spacer_ in Italian a while ago and have gone through half of it, but the lack of any interested in the Italian game community stopped me before completion.

_Spacer_ stuck in my head though. Let me be very clear: I totally love Knave as a streamlined accessible version of classic D&D and its compatibility to classic bestiaries without fuss. For sci-fi, though, this compatibility is not that necessary, since there are few sci-fi D&D based system ([_Hulks & Horrors_](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/111781/Hulks-and-Horrors--Basic-Black-Edition), [_Space Dungeon_](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/271279/SPACE-DUNGEON-Book-I-Starsailors-and-Psionics) and [_Machinations of the Space Princess_](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/116412/Machinations-of-the-Space-Princess) come to mind, bet there are a few others out there).

[Plerions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulsar_wind_nebula) aka Pulsars with Nebula, are _“a type of nebula sometimes found inside the shell of a supernova remnant (SNR), powered by winds generated by a central pulsar”_. I simply need an astronomical object name that sounds good, that’s why!

[**Plerion**](https://plerion.zeruhur.space/) will be a space opera adventure game. My debt to _Traveller_ is huge, but I am not aiming at the type of science fiction. My primary inspiration for this are Jack Vance’s Gaean Reach, Becky Chambers’s Wayfarer Series, Mass Effect, and to a lesser degree David Brin’s Uplift Series. Travel between the stars will be faster (1pc/hour), there will be huge empires, large unexplored regions, grandeur, a dash of transhumanism. This is the general plan.

This is a rough outline of things to be done:

- (almost there) re-skin _Cairn_ merging _Spacer_ inventory. I’ve already written down “The Principles of the Universe” section to give an idea of the implied setting.

- (WIP) Psionics and Cybernetics section, cleaning up the Character Creation section of the relative tables.

- Vehicles & Starship, in _Into the Odd_ way of doing.

- Worlds & Systems: here the magic happens. It will be the most hard section to draft, since I need to cobble together an algorithm worthy of Traveller (but simpler, for goodness’ sake!). I am also trying to figure out the best way to represent 3 dimensions if possibile, since the common work around for this type of games is to flatten everything on a hexmap.

- Spacefaring Adventures: this wants to be a referee’s guide to writing adventures and gives random tables and such things.

- Creatures: here I am going to adapt the sci-fi section of [so1um enhanced](https://so1umenhanced.zeruhur.space/)’s bestiary.

- Loadouts to emulate classes through equipment, Cairn style.

Since it’s based on the same chassis, Plerion will be mostly compatible with another sci-fi hack in the makings, the [Monolith SRD](https://adam-hensley.github.io/Monolith/) by Adam Hensley, which is a different look on the matter with careers a là _Into the Odd_, and a different way to manage travel and maps. Both Adam and I are excited of this portability, since the community will have more toolkits to build their sci-fi game of preference.

This sounds great!

If you want to simplify Traveller’s world generation can I suggest just roll for population and tech level and then a d66 table for what’s unique here. That’s all you need.

As for the 3d map, there is no simple solution and even the complicated solutions aren’t great. However instead of having a map for players to read and interpret, you could just give them a travel time chart showing the distances between different systems in 3d space. Have maybe a dozen planets within a star cluster and hours of travel between them. Then you can have a chart for travel times between clusters (probably measured in days).

it’s a good idea, I’ll figure out something!

at the 1pc/hour rate it’s matter of hours to reach minor systems, five galaxies with such a fast mean of travel and natural/artificial wormholes to cut through make definitely a huge playgroud

A preview of the section Worlds & Systems

> ## Space Geography
>
> The enormous expanses that access to oddspace has made traversable have generated the need to map the vastness of the Five Galaxies.
>
> Normal space is subdivided into 10pc-sided cubes, called sub-sectors.
>
> Below is the conventional scale in which the Charted Space is subdivided:
>
> - **Sub-sector** : A region of 10pc3 space in which there are several star systems.
>
> - **Sector** : A region of 100pc3 space or 100 sub-sectors.
>
> - **Cluster** : Aggregation of 2 or more sectors, usually defined by political entities.
>
> - **Quadrant** : A quarter of a galaxy, containing several territories each.
>
> To this geography is added the topography of the Wormhole Access Network (WAN). Numerous natural and man-made wormholes are maintained to connect distant sectors and shorten travel times. Usually travel between wormholes is instantaneous and subject to a fee. A pair of wormholes is in exclusive communication, often natural wormholes are single way, while artificial wormholes are always double way, unless disabled on purpose.
>
> ## Astrography
>
> The space is usually mapped at the local sub-sector level. To represent a three-dimensional space, it is possible to “squash” the representation into two dimensions, representing the distances between nearest stars as edges of a graph.

As an optional method to draw a sub-sector map I am experimenting with it’s a very simple dice drop with colored dice as this:

 ![photo_2022-02-27_09-23-54](https://discourse.rpgcauldron.com/uploads/default/original/1X/de27a8adc3db2b81071d8a91e0b02f7d737b153f.jpeg)

Each edge length is determined adding up the two nearest dice value and subtracting two (as a 2d6-2 throw). This is the distance in parsecs between the stars. Optionally you could use the die color to determine the spectral class (I am going to draft a table for these).

I’m trying to picture your subsectors and sectors and I think you’ve got your maths wrong somewhere.

“Normal space is subdivided into 10pc-sided cubes, called sub-sectors.”

" \* **Sector** : A region of 100pc3 space or 100 sub-sectors."

So if a sub-sector is a cube 10pc to a side, and a Sector is a cube 100pc to a side, then each Sector will contain 1000 Sub-sectors.

no, I am using the Cairn approach to equipment
but Monolith has a sort of lifepath system, more like Bastionland though

Hi Rob,

You showed me some time ago the 3-dimensions (x, y, z) method to draw systems in Plerion.

Have you abandoned it in favour of a lighter representation system as you mentioned to me?

the costs in terms of complexity outweighed the benefits
the graph will be the definitive way to represent maps in Plerion

The section Vehicles & Starship is online!
It’s fairly complex, more than I was expecting but still in line with the design philophy of ItO/Cairn
let me know what do you think about it!
