What are you actually playing?

I run a bi-weekly 5e campaign in Blackmarsh. Running a weekly troika game. Playing in lotfp from time to time. Playing knave and cairn when I can. Mothership when we need a pallet cleanse. Planning on spinning up an Ose game when my 5e campaign wraps up.

Mainly vibes. Still highly b/x compatible.

I wanted a game that feels hopeful. A lot of OSR these days feels either dark/metal or superbright/vanilla. I really wanted a game that says, “yeah, things are bad, but we’re going to try anyway.”

LoZ inspires the setting and campaign, and some of the classes (Summoner/Mage) draw inspiration from FF jobs.

I’m running a Mothership game live over discord, that started with Another Bug Hunt, but the survivors have commandeered The Metamorphosis (the ship the PCs arrive in, in ABH) and have turned to a life crime dipping in to A Pound of Flesh. I’ve built out a big sandbox for them by smashing all the TKG modules with Hull Breach and a smattering of other content.

I’m also running a play by post game for the same players with Cairn 2e and Nightmare over Ragged Hollow which has been a blast too.

Everyone in the group are also GMs so we occasionally get something else to the table. Had a one-shot of Beyond the Wall and Gardens of Ynn that I got to play in that was really awesome.

I started a Traveller campaign right before the holidays. Gonna resume it next week, I think this will go on for at least a dozen session or so.

I’m slowly preparing to run some one-on-one Burning Wheel stuff this year, and a group OSR game. I don’t know if it’ll be Dolmenwood, OSE, Wolves upon the Coast or Outcast Silver Raiders; but it’ll be something along these lines.

I guess I’ll jump in to say, many years after my last post on this thread, I’m now running a historical Urban Shadows 2e campaign set in Boston in 1968, and I’m playing in a game of Apocalypse World: Fallen Empires. They both just got started and so far they’re both a great time!

I am playing Heart in a world we created through A Quiet Year. Also, Mausritter with my son.

2E Mongoose or one of the classic editions?

I’m running an open table, quasi-West Marches (all sessions begin and end in town) Shadowdark game with one other GM. We’ve had 8 sessions with 14 different players with a huge range of experience levels. It has been a blast!

I am currently running 2 games:

  1. Dolmenwood! An ongoing campaign of about a year at this point, a rather impressively coherent plot has sprung from it.
  2. His Majesty the Worm! I just got started with it the other day. We made the city together, determined the general layout of the dungeon, and only THEN made characters. Honestly, one of the best "Session 0s" I've ever had.

One of my favorite things about the wormgame is how it encourages relationships between characters as a significant part of the game- anyone have luck replicating that in other systems?

I’ve played a little Burning Wheel and a one-on-one game is still very high up my wishlist. Definitely not a game for the “don’t read the book” crew. I’m very jealous!

Love Urban Shadows, although I find 2e a bit crunchy for my taste.

Why Boston in '68 specifically?

I actually found Burning Wheel to work immensely well when you keep to the core rules on the first 74 or so pages. I mostly put aside all the advanced conflict systems and optional systems and have found myself a strong framework for one-on-one character-driven roleplay.

Agreed. The character burning and BITs with just the Hub can make a great game. I really love Duel of Wits, the only in depth system I played in BW

In terms of 1e vs. 2e, there are things I like about both, but I decided I wanted to give the 2e faction system a fair shake this time around, after ignoring it the past few times I ran the system.

I read a really excellent book about the 1960s counter culture in Boston, Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968 By Ryan Walsh, and said “There is an Urban Shadows campaign in this.” I had a good time adapting the history to an urban fantasy setting, and two sessions in (third session tonight) it’s been a blast to play.

Working on my Star Trek Adventures 2E campaign this week. I’ve got a lot of stat blocks to roll up, and some real decisions about how the first 4-5 sessions are gonna play out.

Love this system, it does 1 shots/episodes like a dream. Looking forward to seeing how it can handle the insanity of a full campaign.

I’m currently playing Old School Essentials solo with a few house rules and a few different oracles. I also get a game of Mordheim in about once a month.

My group is still on break from holidays but hopefully we can get back to the table soon!

I am playing Mythic Bastionland, Cairn, A Fistful of Crystals, Pathfinder 2E, and an FKR thing.

I am running the MB and FKR.

Absolutely love mordheim. That is likely my all time fave tabletop mini game. It really opened my eyes to playing mini games to see what happens rather trying to win. I did a campaign about 10 ago years over a summer. I don’t remember who “won” but I’ll never forget when my leader sustain a head injury which made him blood thirsty. It totally shifted the campaign for me in a way that was unexpected and I loved it.

I’m currently running Blackwyrm of Brandinsford using Cairn in a PBP game. I’ve have a few other adventures lined up for when they finish that up.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to switch to Mythic Bastionland once I get my hardcopy. How are you liking it? Are you using the hex procedure for stocking the world?
