Calendar Chronicles

Here I advocate for using a calendar to structure your long-running campaigns.

I wonder how hard it would be to set up a shared online calendar using a CalDAV server like Radicale. Something your players could check on between games when they want to refresh themselves on past events or upcoming events that their characters would know about.

That’s a cool idea! This would mean you could just use your favorite calendar app doesn’t it?

Who was it who said: "YOU CAN NOT HAVE A MEANINGFUL CAMPAIGN IF STRICT TIME RECORDS ARE NOT KEPT.” ?

Yeah, probably. At least, I don’t know of any calendar apps that wouldn’t subscribe to a CalDAV calendar.

Of course, the limitation is that it would have to be a standard calendar. Seven day weeks, Gregorian months, etc. You couldn’t really do it with, say, Blades In the Dark timekeeping.

I’ve been using a spreadsheet calendar to track days and weeks in my mothership game. It’s pretty essential when you have characters spending so much time in cryo as they fly around the sector. It’s also where I track fuel consumption and when to move planets and moons in their orbits.

I added a calendar to my Notion document I used for campaign prep when running my Blackmarsh campaign. It was super helpful. I use the timeline view for the most part and try to log session notes and major events along with plan holidays and track major NPC movements. Attached screenshot of what that interface looks like.

I used to add entries for what the players did each day as well, but it cluttered my calendar and I didn’t see the value in putting past events on it.

However seeing yours it looks like it could actually work pretty well if you opt in for the gantt chart route! Very cool!
