Looking to finalize travel rules and have come to the conclusion that I need rules for bushwhacking (traditional strike-out-into-the-wilds exploration) and rules for expeditions (journeys along roadways). I’ve enjoyed both hexcrawls and pointcrawls over the years, so the former is getting a hexcrawl procedure and the latter a pointcrawl procedure. That makes the most sense to me and seems to be what I end up doing at the table, anyway, though I’ve not formalized it.
Anybody else switch back and forth between the two?

i like to do both, i usually make a hexmap, then add trails and stuff to it. moving between hexes without a path is as slow as you go and there is a small chance of getting lost, trails and roads let you go faster and mean you can’t get lost.
i like the way that using points and paths makes giving directions really easy, and allows players to connect dots and find shortcuts, they also provide a strong base for navigational puzzles
i treat hexmaps like ice trays to fill with encounter tables and locations, it’s a usefull way to organize an area.
i have been running a wilderness focused game for a while now, and the focus on travel has added forward momentum to the game in a really cool way, and now my party is wintering in a megadungeon near town. i don’t know if they’ll return to the forest come spring.
