Mind mapping

I just took all my pages of notes for my general magic system and laid it out using an online mind mapping site. I figured it’d help in organizing the whole pile to see it all visually. Then I could make it usable for writing the full text.

Yeesh. So much stuff! I think the most useful part of the exercise has been seeing those concepts that have appeared in two different branches, indicating that I need a better understanding of where they should be to explain them clearly and concisely.

I also noticed that one of the key elements – the concept of Aura that magic users possess that allows them to channel mana – is likely better addressed in character generation rules. I’ll write it up with the magic sub-system, though, so it can explain that when I release the magic rules for use with existing rule sets, then port it to chargen in mine.

Anyway, the site I used is Mind Map Maker

Nice!

When I write prep notes I most often make them as mind maps, using the canvas in obsidian.md. Makes it so fast to find things during play and it forces me to not indulge in big chunks of text.

I downloaded Obsidian a long while ago. I’ve not spent enough time learning it to find it useful and don’t foresee spending the time to do so. I suspect it’s one of those things that had I been able to begin with a subset of its features and then been able to add more as I went along, it would have been wonderful.
