Some of my thoughts based on a conversation we were having in the #layout-and-production channel on discord yesterday.
Very helpful! I have been wondering if I should do some kind of evening class in design & layout, given the relevance to the hobby.
While you could take a class I would imagine it might be a little cost prohibitive vs. the reward. Instead I would maybe suggest a book like Making and Breaking the Grid (https://www.amazon.com/Making-Breaking-Grid-Third-Workshop/dp/0760381933/), it was basically my intro class back in college a million years ago. Explorers Design also has a lot of great articles for ttrpg designers.
made an account just to say thanks for this. it was an invaluable read for me
That’s awesome, thanks for the praise and welcome to the community!
What’s quite useful for these type of diagrams (or even simple page listings) is bringing in more of the outline of the book. Dungeon sub-sections are a good example, where rooms just belong together and you want them closer to each other, without the need to thumb through the book needlessly. Sometimes moving art around or just adding a page break helps a lot to have what you need on one spread.
I missed this post when you originally shared it. I do the same thing when I start projects. I almost exclusively think of books like a matrix of little rectangles.
There was a time where I was regularly doing 100+ page books at work, and I couldn’t have done them without a tool like this.
