Pokémon is OSR

I know I’m not the only Pokémon head in this forum, so I’m sure some of y’all will also think this blog post about Pokémon being OSR is a fun read.

(Also Into the Oddish looks like so much fun!)

(All of this inspired me to break out an old game for the GBA (Pokémon LeafGreen) and try the Nuzlocke Challenge for the first time.)

It would be a fun read or something fun to discuss if the last few blog posts were an examination or discussion, rather than very thinly veiled marketing for an upcoming product.

I’m a fan of red and blue as well, but very adverse to the sales strategy of Game Freak / Nintendo.
I was also taken aback by the blatant marketing ploy of “heistfunding”, nostalgia, product/name recognition and the move to not only parody Pokémon but copy the sales strategy as well.

I also think that these blog posts have a negative impact on our community’s discussions, moving them closer to talking about products instead of talking about our hobby.

I actually wrote (my first) blog post about this. It’s here if you’re interested in my (sharply worded) thougths:

Hey, I enjoyed your blog post and your take. I don’t agree with everything you said, but I can absolutely see where you’re coming from. We’re definitely in a weird spot in the hobby where a lot of folks are trying to make a living off of it, which can clash with the free (gratis and libre) and DIY attitude that was more prevalent a few years ago. Not a value judgement in either direction–just an observation.

I enjoyed this read, and it reminded me that I don’t need to be hustling to contribute to the space. Thank you!
