I’ve been looking for a gaming resource and surprised that it doesn’t seem to exist.
I like in person play - games are how I like to meet people. Also, since I have neither a) nostalgia for these games from childhood b) excitement about actual play shows, my interest in these games tends to be niche. If it matters, that niche involves improvised narrative, coherent settings, and character development that goes beyond the quirky hat, or XP. The niche doesn’t involve theatrics about a player’s skill to roll a nat. Lately, I’ve been playing Mythic Bastionland and Brindlewood Bay.
My best resource is the local game shop. I show up to be an ambassador GM for a few walk-in games per month. It’s fun, and educational, but the reality is most people walking in are looking for game A or B. And, the shop is there to run a business. Other local resources like Meetup or local Reddit have been a complete dud.
Really, what I need is not “location → special interest”, but “special interest → location”. Have I overlooked this resource? It’s mind boggling to me that startplaying.games does not have local games, but I guess they are also a business.
