For fun and to foster community creations on the RPG Cauldron Discourse Forums, I am hosting a “Secret Santa” of sorts.
I’m shamelessly stealing the concept from the OSR community.
The Idea in Brief:
You submit a topic request for someone else to write a response to in a forum post, optionally linking to an additional blog post.
On Dec. 15th, I shuffle the requests and assign them secretly to people.
As soon as you want, you write your response to your assigned person and publish a forum post with optional linked blog post.
In the sheet, provide your forum username and optionally your discord username for being reached out to for delivery. Optionally, add your blog for where you’ll write your blog post response in addition to the RPG Cauldron Discourse forum post.
If the requester gave a blog and you write a blog, consider linking to theirs within your blog post.
A loose deadline for responses would be the 25th, but given we’re starting late I think around the new year is more reasonable.
The topic requests can be anything to do with TTRPGs and need not be seasonal! All responses are expected to be completed within one or two sittings. If you request something complex, expect a simpler response. Although, responders can write as much as they want of course, if they so desire. Though remember a rough yet thoughtful response is better than nothing!
These responses will hopefully encourage some further discussion under their respective posts!

If we have four or more people sign up, I’ll definitely run it.
[edit: I decided to make it easier for cataloging by adding a list of the delivery forum posts]
We got over 4 people, so the event is certainly happening! A couple days left for people to join.
The NSR discord is hosting a Holiday Hangout on Jan 2-4. Given this, I decided to make the end of January 4th the deadline for latest delivery. This lets people hang out and make them or discuss those that were already shared! And ofc create or do whatever else they want at the hangout.
“Magic systems that aren’t vancian magic? More freeform spell systems, moving away from strictly defined spells and into soft magic systems where players can be creative with a set of spell tools”
This is my cobbled together answer and the games and magic systems that inform it. Hope y’all enjoy!
Thanks for asking,@greenmirror– I fear you’ll find more about my dreams (and how they could be used in an adventure game) in the following piece than you bargained for.
I find these kinds of events useful in various ways. For example, it opens up a straight forward premise and encourages us to write something, anything which is good for starting out or building up a blog writing repretoire or for just practice in this creative endeavor.
This time I decided I’d do more research to help provide a collection of things that already exist and build off on that idea. It does take more time though. Fortunately I do have things written down and I got thoughts.
Having some fun with my post - it’s still a work in progress, but you can take a look here:
I’m taking a break for the moment and letting the ideas stew - I’ll do some more revisions over the coming days until I’m happy with it. (And maybe go back and hack at it some more later! It’s a fun little project to have.)
@WindowDump and @dododecahedron I’ll read all y’all things with GusLs soon! I’ll make a thread to discuss em if when I get around to it they don’t yet have one. :]
