hi! i’m new here (been kind of lurking for the last few weeks), nice to meet you y’all
i’ve been in the early stages of thinking about a project, and inspired by the blog book club on west marches, i thought i might throw this here to see if any of you had done something like these or would have tips
i’m a streamer, i have a small but engaged community, and i’m thinking of running an “one shot” but something like a gauntlet/funnel/meatgrinder adventure (whatever that means, i’m not totally sure what these terms mean specifically, but i think they capture the idea) as a special halloween event
i was thinking about mork borg, something highly lethal, and a kind of queue where the audience/players could sign up to, and after they die, end of the queue and another person goes on. something fairly low commitment for each player but that would register their collective effort after some hours (i’m prepared to dm for 4~6h).
something like a horror funhouse, or a kind of tournament module of sorts. does that make any sense to anyone? does it sound fun or something that you have run/played? would you have any suggestions for adventures that would fit this kind of stuff? (mork borg or otherwise). i thought this is something that might have been tried at a convention or smth, but i couldn’t find much online with a structure like this. would love any thoughts about this and thanks!
i’ve done a bit more research on it and somebody might find the results useful, idk!
as for just having a good time, i got really interested in Magical Murder Mansion. the idea is that this is a funhouse that kind of makes sense. Read some reviews and it seems really fun tbh.
another adventure i found is Tournament of Pigs. kind of a medieval game show with “rooms” (dressed as mini-games) in a semi-competitive environment
i also learned that the good people of goodman games have run some stuff more or less in this sense at conventions, both with DCC and XCrawl Classics, more focused in a tournament-style of play. doesn’t exactly fit my needs, but they have rules and resources available on the website that got me itching to do it too (and a lot of the theme choices for XCrawl finally made sense to me lol)
Welcome! One thing I would be concerned about is that although this style of play can be very lethal that depends very much on the exact module and rules (which you can control for) but also on the quality of the decisions the players make and on the dice.
Would your community be disappointed if either very few players died (so not very many people got to play) or if some players got a very long go (because they got lucky for some time) while others died almost immediately?
Yeah, my biggest worry is people not dying enough, since the rotating player thing would be the fun part of it. As most of them are not very familiar with OSR play, it might not be a problem. As for some people dying very quickly, I’d guess that wouldn’t be an issue, specially if I’m upfront about it, so I’m definitely looking into the comically lethal type of adventures hahaha and thanks for the welcome!!
