There’s a specific kind of scenario that I love in RPGs and that’s the PvP one shot.
I first encountered them with Burning Wheel’s: The Sword, in which 4 adventurers find a sword that’s they all need. The Elf needs to return it to their father, the Dwarf needs to return it to his clan, the human needs to be paid for his gambling debts and the rat man needs to be paid plus has all the advantages of the cave.
I investigated other Burning Wheel set ups like this that the community had made.
There was one about a witch doomed to execution brought to an isolated tavern which gets snowed in and becomes the Hateful Eight.
There was one about the Elves forgetting a gift for the Dwarves and the dwarves getting all paranoid and becoming their jailors.
The Burning Wheel folks even made a unique game called Inheritance which tells the tale of a viking funeral at which a kinslaying son returns to ask for forgiveness and his share. This one is amazing!
I’ve seen some low stake nordic larps and some shitty D&D “wacky races” but it’s really rare to find good ones. But I‘ve also seen that the hobby is routed in a game called Braunstein which apparently comes from this PvP tradition but hasn’t become widespread like the rest of the material.
