A Gothic Horror Fantasy Game: Gothic Moor

Hello! I am sharing with you a post from our Facebook page. Every week we write a little bit about the game we are making called Gothic Moor, sharing the art that inspired it and some talks about the system and the lore of the setting!
This is the first post we did: Redirecting...
If you are interested, we also have a Facebook group for updates on the game! We are trying to create a community so that more people will know the game and get feedback, since it’s still a work in progress and in playtest (but it is available for free download!). So join us if you are interested, all info is available on the Abysso Magazine Facebook page!
Enjoy!

did a VERY quick read.

I like the dice mechanic. I could imagine it becoming pretty simple after a few iterations. Would also work well with custom cards or dice. Given the flavor of the game, I think custom cards would be GREAT (and I THINK cheaper than custom dice?).

Its more combat/traditional d and d than I supposed. I would love to see the fear/horror system a little bit more integrated?

Also, have you thought about THE SUBLIME? any way to tie that in? such an important genre convention.

Hey, thank you so much for your time!
I don’t know about cards, instead of dice? It would feel underwhelming to be honest. This is an OSR game to use with dice, this is what we wanted to make, a game where you throw lots of dice and feel the magnitude of the throws the higher they get. Maybe custom dice in a distant future, but not cards. I don’t see that in the future.
It is a fantasy rpg after all so yes, there has to be that side in the game, but you are right, there isn’t much of the fear mechanic because it is still in the works. We are still figuring out if this works or not. I never thought about the sublime, but there is Passion as a characteristic. We don’t want to add more characteristic on the character sheet, to be honest we are trying to figure out if we want to cut some Special Skills and Innate Abilities, maybe just have “Body, Mind and Soul” as main abilities and just have some minor skills connected to them. Everythign is still in the works! All ideas are welcome to be tested

here is my quick plug for cards:

you can make them very graphically occult, basically tarot cards, which would fit the setting vibes. also, would make learning the resolution mechanic even faster. the 6 result is very ACE like, the 1 result would be like a death card. then a success card. then a boring neutral card. card play DOES slow down a game though…

so yea, custom dice would be nice as well! fast. and with custom, you just leave 2,3,4 blank. put a skull on 1. a star on 6 then, uh, something for 5. and reading those dice would be very very fast.

have you seen what liminal horror does for fear/horror? you might find some ideas here: Investigators | Liminal Horror

what I like about that system is that you can make bespoke fallout tables for different things, like a certain monster can have its own fallout table, staring into THE ORB can have its own effects, etc. etc.

all in all, I think you should really lean into the gothic part of the game, it will help the game stand out, so yea, I hope you figure out ways to get fear/horror/etc integrated in a new and awesome, or refined or whatever way.

I do like the idea of Occult tarot cards with beautiful black and white art, but it becomes another game, as you said, it would slow down the game.
You just reminded me that there are empty dice on Amazon that I could get to try somethinng out! It would get the game quicker!
Oh yes! I know liminal horror! I still have to read the rules, I just saw a gameplay on Mystery Quest, very cool game! Thank you for the suggestions! I like it when people suggest different ideas, whether I like them or not
