Let's Build a d100 Table of Magic Rings for Cairn

(17) Ring of the Howl

1 charge.

  • You can howl like a wolf to summon 1d6 wolves that arrive ten minutes later. They follow you and fight with you until the moon rises.
  • Recharge: Sleep alone under the full moon in the forest.

(18) Ring of Returned Armor

4 uses, Cursed

• Impossibly dark and skillfully forged with the emblem of a shield. +1 STR and +4 armor while charged. Receiving a hit removes a use and gently warms the ring.

• At 0 uses the ring adheres to the skin and becomes painfully hot. Lose all HP while worn. The permanently hot ring is removed with ease by a blacksmith

I like it! The recharge seems a little easy given the power of the ring. Maybe add another couple of conditions to the way your character has to sleep under a full moon. Sleep naked under a full moon and maybe something else.

Thanks! It might still be a bit strong but it’s intended for one set of 4 charges then be impossible to use again to hopefully balance it out.

Sorry. I think I posted this under the wrong ring. Your ring is excellently evil if you use it too many times!

Generally, if the relic cannot be recharged in Cairn, I believe the the tag uses is used instead of charges. I think that helps eliminate possible confusion.

I edited it. What do you think of it now?

It’s good. I’m just throwing out ideas. It could also be something like:
Sleep alone and naked exposed on a hill in the forest under a full moon.

To me it feels like the ring gives you serious power so you should need to endure serious danger to recharge it. But that’s me. It’s your ring and I’ll like it whatever you do with it.

(19) Ring of Moth-cloak

2 charges

  • Hundreds of moths of different kinds flock to you and settle on your person until you are fully obscured - others can only see a rough humanoid shape. You can breath normally, and you see in black and white. Your voice sounds like many overlapping whispers.
  • Recharge: Gently hold a moth pupa (cocoon) in your mouth for a day without parting your lips.

(20) Ring of secret signs

5 charges

  • The ring has a sharp black gem. If you use it to scratch a symbol into wood or stone it is invisible except to the wearer, who sees it as bright lines of fire.
  • Recharge: Carve a 5 letter word into your skin with the gem, losing 1 HP and permanently scarring yourself. Each time you do this the word must be different.

(21) Ring of the phantom hand

3 uses

  • The hand and arm bearing the ring may pass through a wall or door, up to the shoulder. A single held item that is not bulky may also pass through. After 1 minute the effect ends; if you do not withdraw in time you are permanently fused in place.
  • Recharge: Bury the ring ten feet deep overnight and then find it again.

Huh, learned something new. I had not encountered the phrase associated with Mad Magazine but rather a pulp character from the '30s called The Shadow (or more recently the film adaptation from 1994) who had the power to “cloud men’s minds”.

I’m sure that’s where MAD magazine got it from. I’m thinking it will be great fun to watch the shadow of someone in a social scene strangling or stabbing the person they’re sucking up to.

(22) Band of Lightening

3 uses

  • A smooth ring made of a dull grey metal that weighs less than expected. A touched object “loses” weight until it floats in the air. Once out of uses, the ring floats away at the first opportunity.

(23) Ring of Mice

3 charges

  • Summons d1000 white mice. They emerge at top speed from a single hole or crack of your choosing, no matter how small. 100 mice can emerge per round (10 per second). The mice behave as normal mice do: panicking and running away from larger creatures, seeking out food, etc.
  • Recharge: Catch a wild mouse without hurting it and keep it as a pet for at least a week.

Since this ring can be recharged, I’d use charges instead of uses. I think uses is reserved for relics that can’t be recharged.

Oops. Fixed. Thank you

Twenty three rings so far. Not bad.

Ring of Comeliness

When encountering an NPC whose reaction to the party is not obvious, tap the ring to expend a charge. The Warden then rolls 2d6 and consult the following table.

2 3-5 6-8 9-11 12
Hostile Jealous Friendly Lustful Altruistically Helpful
---- ---- ----

undefined|----|----|----|----|----|

Charges: 3

Recharge: Remain pure of mind and body until the new moon. :new_moon_face:

(25) Ring of Gullibility

3 charges

  • Any intelligent creature who witnesses you pointing and saying “Look!” will be compelled to look in that direction. WIL save to resist, will not be aware of the magic.

  • Recharge: Do not deceive anyone, in any way, for a week.

A bit goofy, but I think this could be great fun. I’m not sure about whether the target should make a WIL save or not. Maybe fewer charges and no save?

I’m also not sure about the recharge. A week is a long time and I know I wouldn’t be able to keep track of whether or not the players have deceived anyone.
